A President of the United States can pardon anyone, anywhere in the county. In the case of the U.S. v. Joe Arpaio, President Trump granted a pardon to Mr. Arpaio in November of 2017.
Joe Arpaio called himself the toughest sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona where he served as sheriff since 1992. It was his in-human and cruel actions against the Latino population of Maricopa County which helped to land Mr. Arpaio in jail.
It was revealed in a law suit in 2011 against Sheriff Arpaio that he was accused of detaining and jailing Arizona’s Latino population illegally. A Circuit Judge warned him to stop his activities and to cease violating the rights of immigrants and the Latino citizens of Maricopa County. Joe Arpaio ignored the Court’s Order; thus, he was arrested.
The earlier law suit and the following court papers have identified that award-winning journalists Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey had a great deal to do with exposing the illegal actions of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The back story for Larkin, Lacey, and Arpaio stems from the many published stories by the journalists describing the former sheriff’s tortures, death, and imprisonment of Latinos. Lacey and Larkin also reported on the Sheriff’s illegal financial activities.
In a nighttime raid in October 2007 at the home of Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, Sheriff Joe Arpaio jailed the journalists and took their confidential notes and paperwork.
The arrest of Jim and Michael hit the newspaper industry around the U.S. The American Civil Liberties Union, grassroots organizations for justice, and several politicians raised an uproar on their arrest and demanded that the journalist be released immediately.
Jim and Michael spent 24 days in jail and when they were released filed a law suit against the Maricopa County officials for violating their First Amendment rights. After five years, Jim and Michael were found not guilty against the unsubstantiated charges that Sheriff Arpaio and the officials brought against them.
Larkin and Lacey sued the County and won their case with a 3.7 million-dollar settlement. Larkin and Lacey used the money to establish the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. Frontera is an organization which supports Latino immigrants and all citizens in protecting their First Amendment rights. Read more: Jim Larkin | LinkedIn and Jim Larkin | Angel.co
But the question is, why did the Trump Administration pardon Joe Arpaio? It is surmised that when candidate Donald Trump was campaigning in Arizona, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio aggressively stumped for him.
When the pardon was granted, Larkin and Lacey said that this was a less than proud day for the Administration and the country. Also, Joe Arpaio attempted to run for sheriff again, but he was defeated. Now that the country has learned about Joe Arpaio, all civil rights organizations, the Frontera Fund, and other grassroots organizations know who he is and what he stands for.
In addition to monitoring Joe Arpaio is the new website created by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin called the Front Page Confidential which reports on issues involving threats to freedom of speech, First Amendment issues, and people’s rights in general.
